In 1831, Catherine McAuley and two other women in Dublin, Ireland, became the first Sisters of Mercy. Today, more than 9,000 Sisters of Mercy globally continue Catherine’s legacy of caring for the economically poor, especially women and children. 

Inspired by the life of Jesus and by Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy envision a just world for people who are poor, sick and uneducated. The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas includes more than 2,500 women serving in communities throughout the United States, Central and South America, Guam, Jamaica and the Philippines. Since arriving in the United States in 1843, the Sisters expanded their works of Mercy to include education, health care, and pastoral and social services. The Sisters of Mercy continually look for ways to respond to unmet needs of the time and to serve those most in need. 

As a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, our work aligns with the mission, values and concerns of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy. Each of our shareholder advocacy priorities and impact investments aligns with one or more of the Critical Concerns, which are deeply held by the sisters.
